So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.”
Psalm 90:12 (KJV)
As I ended my morning devotion today, this was the prayer that resonated in my heart. Life is too short, yet we carry on as if we have assuredly a thousand days to live. Days turn into months and years almost unnoticed, and in the rush of routines, we forget how fragile and precious time really is. As I visited a friend who lost a relative today, this scripture resonated once again in my mind.
This verse is a prayer by the great prophet Moses as he reflected on the brevity of life, the ephemeral and transient passage of man on earth. It is a gentle yet urgent reminder that there is a wisdom we need from God in order to effectively number our days and live as if we have but a few days to live. This wisdom puts a lot of things into high priority and low priority shelves. The wisdom from God shows us how our lives can be lived with meaningfulness, intentionality and gratitude.
To count and number our days is to live each day, each moment with a purpose-driven attitude; to value relationships and show our loved ones how we love them before it is too late; to make room for reflection on victories and failures; and to pursue what truly matters ie pleasing God and living peacefully with all men.
Today, as we reflect on surgeries, sickness, hospital admissions, etc; it brings up another dimension to this. Doctors are human beings and may be prone to fatal mistakes. Therefore, we must put our ultimate trust in God to give medical practitioners the wisdom and resources to rightly diagnose and treat us. We must remember to acknowledge God as the true Source of all healing while the medical practitioners are His channels.
Horses (ie skilled doctors, effective medicines, best hospitals, elite equipments) are prepared for the daily battles (of living and being healthy) but victory and safety IS from the Lord. (Proverbs 21:31)
Wisdom is not found in having all the answers to all issues of life; wisdom is not found in living long. Wisdom is found in learning to live well in the brief earthly time we’ve been given.
Thank you for reading, and may God bless you immeasurably!
