“Give us this day our daily bread.”

Matthew 6:11

Though a simple sentence, yet a powerful prayer from our Lord Jesus who reminds us to daily depend on God for our every needs. We learn to depend on God not on a weekly or monthly or even a yearly basis; instead it is a daily constant walk with God. Our heavenly Father is inviting us to trust Him for what we need right now- for our daily nourishment, daily emotional strength, daily wisdom, daily understanding, grace, peace, love, etc. for today, and everything we need to achieve for the day.

This simple verse also implies that God does not just care for our needs for tomorrow or for today, but also for what we need for the moment., right now. He is close by to give us the strength to speak in love when we are heated up in the emotions of the moment, the wisdom we need when we are tempted to make a wrong choice on the pressure of the moment; or when we feel as if the world around us is collapsing and we feel helpless.

These verse begins with “Give us…”. In other words, we must realise that we don’t have the capability or the capacity to care for ourselves on a daily basis. Give us implies that we must have an attitude of prayer and humility in the asking. When we fail to humble ourselves enough to ask, to say, “give me”, we ignore and lose out in God’s ability and strength to help us and deliver us.

The second part of this verse says “our daily bread.” It is pertinent to remember that your daily bread is not my daily bread. Therefore, we must ensure that we are asking that which we need for our own sustenance and growth. We must not be alarmed or distracted by what other people are asking as their daily bread. For God deals with us as individuals first of all, before he deals with us as a group. Hence, you must understand what you need, what your daily bread is, and ask for it for and that lies your help and your grace from God.

“May the Lord help you to trust Him even when the road is unclear. , I trust You with today. I trust You to provide, to sustain, and to lead. May God be enough for you and me today, for sufficient unto the day are the needs of that day. Amen.
