For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for My sake shall find it.

Matthew 16:25

When we choose the road to self-preservation or choose to save our skin at all cost, we lose a lot more in the process. We may lose the respect we once held among people as well as the integrity of our lives.

However, when we choose to forgo our rights and sacrifice our preferences because we want to obey God, though it may be painful, we gain life, eternity, and most importantly, we gain the trust and approval of God.

Jesus understood what sacrifice meant. He did not consider his comfortable throne, the comfort of heaven or his daily needs, He gave them up for a far greater good. Imagine if He chose self-preservation… 

Thus, anyone who is willing to follow God, must forget self, forget themselves and give up their rights for the One who gave up everything for us. 

Finally, there is a reward attached to any choice we make; whether for self denial or self preservation. The former is invisible and eternal while the latter is visible and temporary. 

However, it is up to us to choose based on what we value most: God’s approval or men’s applause?
