I have learnt that the secret of friendship is to give people a second chance, while you discover who they really are. It is somewhat immature and lack of understanding of purpose that make us make up our minds about others before we actually meet them and know them. We find it easier to rely on other people’s perception which is based on their interactions (both sweet and sour) with the person in question. Consequently, we size them up by their clothes, hair, social status, car… and most times miss the opportunity to relate with them from a clear-minded disposition.

God did not chose David because of his ruddy looks nor his handsome face. God chose him because of his inner quality, his God-fearing heart and his devotion to God. Samuel looked but didn’t see. Like many of us, Samuel made conclusions based on the physical appearances. God knew David by heart because overtime, God watched him and saw how David responded to issues of life around him. God expects the same attitude from us.

When we make effort to look beyond the physical, the colourful razzmatazz, the glitter and the glam, and get right down to the basics to get to know others more and better, it is noble and praiseworthy. It is the path to true lasting fellowship and friendship intended by God. It is the secret of discovering the strengths and weaknesses of each other and how we can complement and comfort one another in Christ and through Christ.

God’s intention is that we become examples of true friendship and companion to others. He desires us to know and understand others better, to look beyond the physical appearance and learn how to ultimately brings their companions closer to Jesus. Make a commitment today to know others more through their heart.

“The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” – 1 Samuel 16:7

Shalom.
