Faster cars overtook me and I also overtook slower cars. However, I didn’t really enjoy the fact that some cars could overtake me. I didn’t also realise that was how some of the drivers in the slower cars felt as I overtook them. In the Lion King Movie, it was called the circle of cars. In context, I call it the circle of cars.
What do I mean? I have to realise that in the circle of cars, it is all about overtaking another and been overtaken by another. It is a continuous never ending circle. A car will always be in front of you and another car will always be behind you. No firsts nor lasts but travellers on a journey, seeking to reach their destination in good time. It is the circle of cars.
I continued my journey.
In the journey of life, we are strangers and pilgrims. This world is not our home, we are all mere travellers and our destination depends heavily how we drove our ‘vehicles’. Did we exhibit road rage and anger when we should be patient and kind? Did we ignore red lights and sped pass with glee of achievement or did we obey the rules set by the authorities? Moreover, in this circle of life, some will be better and ahead of you by age, in finance, in career and education, in wisdom and knowledge, in status and fame, and whatever gifts we desire in this world. Similarly, you will be better and ahead of others in these areas. No firsts no lasts. Each person joins the journey of life immediately they are born. Each person attains their goals and desires when they get to their appropriate junction.
It will be awkward for me to be jealous of the driver of the Rolls Royce in front of me because I am not on the same journey with him. I don’t know where he is coming from and where he is going. Even if he is my friend or acquaintance, he has his journey set for him. Similarly, I must not envy my friends or acquaintance when they appear to have better earthly possessions than me. We are all on a different path in life. I need to focus on my journey and what I need to complete it. I need to focus on God’s promises to me and what He wants to achieve for Him in this world.
Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 10:12-13, “We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves. When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise,… but will confine our boasting to the sphere of service God himself has assigned to us...” This is the attitude God desires from us. To confine and focus our full attention on the sphere of service, the sphere of influence and the work He has specifically called each of us to do. The more we focus on these, the more fulfilling and joyful our lives will be.
Focus on your journey. Avoid envy, jealousy and comparisons. God has set a great journey ahead of you, with exciting turns and great surprises. Focus on His purpose for your life and how He wants to make a difference in others through you.
Shalom.
